About Notions: a Good Life boutique

What’s your notion of a good life?

A good life is built from the little things that make people feel seen, celebrated, connected, and cared for.

Sometimes that means finding the perfect gift at the last minute, treating yourself after a long week, supporting a hometown fundraiser, or choosing a product that gives back to a cause you believe in.

That idea is at the heart of everything we do.

Our Story

Small towns deserve thoughtful shopping experiences too.

Notions began in 2012 with a simple belief: small towns deserve thoughtful shopping experiences too.

Living and working in a rural community, I knew there were times when finding a gift, a special outfit, or even a little reward for yourself meant driving to another town or settling for whatever happened to be available. I wanted Notions to help fill that gap while creating something that felt personal, welcoming, and distinctly connected to the community around us.

Over the years, the boutique has grown and changed alongside my own life. My day job is in brand management for a pet supply distributor, so Notions operates a little differently than a traditional retail store. We are open select evenings and Saturdays, with expanded summer hours when Megan, our wonderful assistant and a substitute teacher in our local public school, has more time to work her magic in the store.

Summer usually means fresh displays, rearranged spaces, and plenty of creative energy.

Notions has never been about becoming the biggest store. It has always been about creating a place people are glad exists.
Rooted in Downtown Fairbury

Community is part of who we are.

We are proudly located in Fairbury’s historic downtown district, where small businesses, historic buildings, local events, and community relationships are all part of the experience.

Community involvement is deeply personal to me. I have spent years involved with local civic organizations and economic development efforts because I believe thriving communities do not happen by accident. They are built when people choose to invest their time, ideas, money, and energy into the places they call home.

That philosophy naturally became part of Notions. We support local fundraisers, collaborate with community organizations, host give-back events, and seek out brands that support charitable causes and passion projects of their own.

What’s your notion of a good life?

There is no single answer. For us, though, community, kindness, purpose, and connection are a pretty good place to start.

Curated for Real Life

A mix that reflects the way people really shop.

Our assortment is intentionally varied because real life is, too.

You will find women’s clothing, children’s clothing and toys, accessories, home goods, gifts, drinkware, seasonal finds, and plenty of little things that simply make life more fun.

We try to be size inclusive whenever our vendors allow, generally carrying women’s apparel from S-3X.

Our buying philosophy is also a balance. We work hard to find pieces at approachable prices because we want Notions to be somewhere you can shop without every purchase feeling like a major decision. At the same time, we also bring in more distinctive, higher-quality, or niche products when we believe they are worth the investment.

Some things are an easy everyday find. Some things are a splurge. And sometimes the perfect thing is simply the one that makes you smile.

What Matters to Us

The values behind the boutique.

Community First

We believe small businesses have a role beyond selling products. Supporting local organizations, fundraisers, schools, events, and community initiatives is part of how we define success.

Kindness Is Contagious

A thoughtful gesture can travel farther than we realize. We love working with brands and organizations that use their businesses to support causes, communities, and passion projects.

Something for Real Life

Our customers have different budgets, bodies, styles, families, and reasons for shopping. We curate a mix that reflects that reality, from affordable everyday pieces to special finds worth investing in.

Small-Town Service

We may not have big-city retail hours or endless aisles, but we can offer something different: a shop where people know the community, care about the experience, and genuinely want to help you find the right thing.

Shop With a Little More Purpose

Some of our favorite products come from brands that believe business can do more than sell something. Our Local + Giving Collection brings together hometown merchandise, fundraiser items, community partnerships, and brands that contribute to causes and passion projects that matter to them.
